Comfrey and Potatoes
« on: April 06, 2010, 08:28 »
looks like my Comfrey is ready to use with my main crop potatoes. Not having done this before could someone please explain the the correct method. As im not sure how much deeper the leaves should go? and do i need to them rot a bit before the pots go in? as i would like to get them all in today.

Cheers MW.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I haven't planted my spuds yet but when I do the comfrey will go in  :D  It doesn't matter if it touches the spud

At the end of last autumn I ripped all the leaves off the comfrey and dug them into the spud bed, I do not know if they will still provide nourishment for the crop.

Is there any evidence that sticking a comfrey leaf under a spud makes any difference to cropping?

Comfrey contains nothing in the way of plant nutrients that can't be found in just about any other plant material. The proportions vary but essentially most terrestrial plants contain the same sort of material and this is only available to other plants as food after it has decomposed.

I'm not saying that comfrey is no use, far from it. But how is it better than nettles or seaweed or any other rotted vegetable matter?

I use what's to hand be it comfrey as a fertiliser or for activating compost, or using nettles to make tea etc. I could buy potato fertilsier but choose not to

"Comfrey contains high levels of the basic NPK nutrients, drawn up from the deep by its extensive root system. This NPK mix makes it an ideal fertilizer for many vegetables but especially so for potatoes and tomatoes"
