I've 6 chickens in their second year and get 4 or 5 eggs a day. However, most days there is a smashed egg amongst them. Only ever one and the others are perfect apart from being messy from the broken egg.  Is an egg eater causing this and should I do anything about it?

If it was an egg eater I would expect more than one to be eaten. How often do you collect the eggs? You could also try making roll away nest boxes. The break is more than likely caused by clumsiness.

What is the quality of the shell of the broken one? I had an old lady who laid weak shelled eggs, and hers always broke.

Hi,

All the chooks were bought as POL last spring, but I think one of them has only come into lay in the last few weeks. All the eggs  have nice thick shells, though there have been a few, over the months, that had very thin shells. The broken eggs appear to have normal shells. Anyway, I'll do nothing and see what happens.
