Mangetout sticks
« on: June 08, 2007, 17:50 »
Any ideas about what to grow my mangetout up when they come through? Variety is Oregon so should be about 3' 6" tall eventually. Two drills 6" apart. Some tree sticks stuck in the ground, or a mini version of runner bean canes? Or anything else?

Thank G it's Friday - been a busy week. I'll need a beer tonight!
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

I've got 6 x 24 ft rows of peas, so no hope of getting enough sticks!

I bang a bit of wood in every 6ft or so, both sides of the row, then string twine between them every 6" or so up the wood. Does that make sense?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've got Oregon Sugarpod too. Sowed em on Sunday and they were up by Wednesday   I've just got canes and some pea netting (bought from Wilkinsons for £1.49 I think. I've no idea if that is the correct way to do it or not? I've got Waverex and Onward to go out too. I'm going to grow em all up the same big structure because I haven't really got any other trenches ready in time.

Peas will cling to anything if they can reach it, including other peas as mine are doing at the moment.  I use the digger dave method but some of the peas are too daft to find the string so climb up the protective cat netting instead, but it's all skyward!  I personally hate pea netting because I can never find the ends and just get into a complete mess with it!!   Plus the wind alwys without fail starts up the moment a bag of netting comes out of the greenhouse, even on otherwise completely still days.

Chap I know uses chicken wire, at the end of the year he just pulls the whole lot up waits for it to dry, then burns all the growth off. The wire's then ready again for next year.

Sheep wire is even better 'cos you can get your hand through for picking / weeding.

Thanks for all the help - I went with a smaller version of runner bean canes, with short sticks to start them off. Hope I don't get the dreaded mangetout blight.
