do you need to water?
« on: April 05, 2010, 15:10 »
Hi. just wondering if i need to water stuff in the un heated greenhouse. Got leeks DD style, cabbage, brocolli, radishes, spring onions and lettuce.

If i do how often? I started the leeks off 2 weeks ago and they not showing yet. Thought maybe the cold water may of slowed them down!?
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!

Water only when you see soil drying out. Best to stick a forefinger into the soil to see if it's dry deeper down as often only the top dries out. If you must water, do it sparingly or you'll encourage fungus which will kill of the seedlings. Some seeds simply take a while to come up rather than it being a shortage of water. Be patient and observant.

yes some take an age it seems.

My leeks took a few weeks and then all of a sudden up they popped - now they are about 5" tall and like thin strands of grass.

Best way I've found is to hold the pot or tray and feel the weight - this will vary with soil-based or peat-based compost - but get used to the feel of it when first watered, then when you think it needs watering, check the weight first. It's surprising how the top feels really dry but the weight is still there. If in doubt, don't water at this time of year.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
