messy strawberry patch
« on: April 06, 2010, 18:16 »
My poor strawberry patch is in a right state - have tried to weed out the weeds and grass that have taken over, and have some hideous weed, looks frondy type leaves when young but the roots are long and white and run underground all over the place.

I am wondering what to do - a) leave as is, cover the bare earth with manure and hope for the best.
b) dig the whole patch up, remove all the roots of the weeds and replant the strawberries,

i found such a clump of this weed (am tryin to identify it but finding it hard to find a webpage that might help as i dont know what its called)

thanks
just keep breathing................

I have to dig and replant my strawbs every few years despite my best efforts to keep the patch weeded. I find that by year 3 the soil is somewhat depleted anyway. I'll dig up and save the best plants, set them aside, fork out all the big weeds, manure and add BFB, rotovate, then replant in rows.
Sounds like work but most experienced growers simply move their patches to new locations every 2-3 years. I haven't that space luxury so simply refurbish my existing patch.

The roots you're describing are either couch or sow thistle, both rampant and regrow from even the tiniest bit left.

Thanks Loubs for that link - its brilliant as often i am looking at weeds when they come up as am pretty good at removing them but knowing what they are is a big help, and looking at the pics i think its pineapple weed thingy, so not sure what the white roots are....but they are coming up, going to have a look at Trilliums suggestion of couch  or sow thistle to see if thats the culprit

Trillium, thanks for that, although my strawb patch is only a year old, the allotment was created from pasture land, so the roots could belong to a number of things - i will research on the link Loub posted,
so i think i am going to dig them all out, get rid of all the roots and weeds and re do the whole thing - i wanted to encase it all in some wooden border so seems like the best solution

Thanks for the speedy replies
