i have a big roll of felt left over from the extension and i thought it looks like weed proof fabric, could it work like it or does it have chemicals and stuff in it??

nah not a good idea,it's full of tar and can cause damage to sensitive plants.youl'd be better off using old carpet.

I don't think I would use it to cover soil - loads of chemicals in it and it would most probably become brittle quite soon in the cold as well as sticky in the heat.

You could go in for making bird-boxes by the dozen or keep an ear open for someone who wants a strip or two for making rabbit hutches...

If there's enough try a swap for something you need instead.
Just a thought.

cut it into 3" squares and sell it on here as root fly collars.

It depends on the type of "felt" you mean as most builders now use breathable felt that is not bitumen/tar  based it is white and looks like "wonder web".

Find out more about its origins. Not all roof felts have tar and other nasties in them. I use some as the previous post - cut into squares and used as collars round my cabbages

felt i thought was tar based,the other products are membranes and should be fine.
