Pig Manure
« on: April 01, 2010, 15:18 »
My brother has a mid sized pig (not sure of breed) and has some well rotted manure in corner of his very large run (piggy isn't silly, he poops as far away as possible from his little shelter  ) and i wondered if my beans and rhubarb would like it come planting time...?

Any reason i couldn't use it.......?

As long as it is well-rotted it should be fine - I believe it is very strong stuff if it isn't.!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

It's the farmer's last choice in manures, but if they have it they'll use it as it's not as strong or useful as other manures. But for free, TAKE IT!  :D

I fetched 10 bags of pig manure from a farm in my mini estate car many years ago. I could feel the heat of it on the back of my neck all the way down the motorway, and the flies encircling my head were a little distracting. The pong was rather strong too. The farmer said that when my neighbours knew about it they would all want some!
We had the best leeks ever that winter.

To my thinking, manure is basically manure, and take whatever you can get as it's all helpful. The farmers here are very reluctant to use pig manure and try to shift it all off to veg growers. I suspect it doesn't have enough nitrogen for commercial corn crops.

Very high in phosphorus pig muck - which is another reason its not used on a commercial sca eas it can cuase alsorts of problems with polluting waterways etc, still, as previosuly mentioned - its free and full of goodness!! Nevermind the smell - think of the mammoth veggies!!
