« on: March 24, 2010, 20:01 »
I have decided to rehouse my hens, (6 and cockerel) and justwondering about whether to get wood or one of the eglu range.  Would be grateful for advice re weather proof (hot or cold) and which would last best ?

well that all depends really on how much money u want to spend . plastic is ideal as it will keep the bugs{ red mite }   away as for the hot an cold i have been told and also read that they keep the chocks warm in the winter an cool in the summer but i just stick to the good old shed , as most ppl know sheds can last and last for many years all they need is a good lick of paint once a year  good thing with them as well if your out with the girls and it pours with rain u can get in the shed with them    thing is each person thinks different on ethier so i suppose u just have to go with what u feel is the best thing to use .

the good thing about the eglu range (besides being so easy to clean out) is their resale price. They really do hold their value and they last for ever.
For your hens and cockerel you would need the eglu cube - so if money is no object then I would go for this, if money is tight then go for a shed and convert it  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

You can also buy plastic sheds and storage boxes that might be suitable with some conversion work.
If you do get red mite, you could remove the wooden perches you made and power wash the plastic store, or indeed, do so to clean it.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

I have an Eglu and I love it, so do the chooks.

I chose it as I had to be able to buy it and get it erected myself so whatever I chose it had to be something I was capable of doing myself. So, I went for an Eglu.  It said it could be erected in two hours. It took me longer as I was on my own and I'm a klutz  :D

It's very easy to clean and it's chunky and robust. You can move them round the garden quite easily so the birds can have access to fresh grass  :)

A single skinned plastic shed would get much hotter in the summer and colder in the winter than a wooden one.

That is why Omlet make the eglu double skinned which keeps it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter than a wooden coop.

If you live within two hours drive of Omlet HQ and buy chickens from the too (very good quality fully vaccinated hybrids) they will put the eglu and run together for you and give you a quick lesson on feeding, handling and wing clipping.
