Lice experience today
« on: March 12, 2010, 23:00 »
Working in the run today I spotted a couple of feathers from my gold laced wyandotte and when I looked she had a slightly pulled about area near her tail. I had a good look although she's still a little difficult to handle, then checked the other three girls. I found clear signs of lice eggs at the base of some feathers on two of them and so they got a liberal dose of Diatom before I disappeared pronto to the pet shop for Frontline. I gave each bird a drop although two had no signs of infestation at all, and interestingly it was the two who sleep together on the floor of the coop who had the eggs.
I am generous with diatom in their coop, bedding and dust bath but it obviously wasn't enough. Within an hour of me spotting them, the gold laced wyandotte laid an egg and she only did one yesterday - usually its every three days! In my fanciful way I imagined she was saying thank you for making me comfortable - hope it has!

Thanks again Looby - my best experience today was finding that the gold laced wyandotte was pulling her feathers because she sleeps under the perch and gets pooed on! This goes dry and she tries to pull it out, so that is what made me find the lice eggs. Unfortunately I didn't have gloves on at the time and my hands are raw with all the anti-bac scrubbing!!!
