A question about grit.
« on: March 14, 2010, 18:01 »
I currently have a small container of grit that my hens seem to use.  But was told today that I should add grit to their food and also scatter some on the floor of their run.
I would be interested to know what the members of this group do and what they think is best.
Thankyou.
Geoff Davis. :)

if yours eat the grit out of a pot then stick with that mine just help themselves to my driveway so I sprinkle their grit and crushed shells on there. I am assuming you have a seperate pot for oyster shell or crushed baked egg shells as well.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I haven't given any eggshells yet, it's just ssome grit that I was sold by the breeder. Looks like cockle shells but I suppose it could be oyster shell..

grit is for grinding their food (as they have no teeth) and oyster shell or baked crushed egg shells are for the calcium that layers need for making the egg shells. If yours are eating their shells in the tub then that part is ok. Are they on grass or free ranging? If they are they could be getting small stones/grit them selves like mine do off our drive  :)
