Late planting garlic advice please
« on: March 09, 2010, 16:15 »
I got my Garlic bulbs in the Autumn, and did nothing with them :( so they withered ... I planted the cloves a few weeks ago one-per-3" pot, but only a few have come up.

I'd like to plant some more.

1) What do you recommend given that they may not now get a decent for frost on them (to help them "clove up").

2) Recommended varieties for planting this late? or do I just go with the normal culprits (from Isle of Wight / Garden centre / Mail-order)?

Thanks

Pop them into a plastic bag, and put them in the freezer for 24hrs. Then pot them up.
They won't know the difference.  :)

Freezer! Will that not kill them?

Put them in the bottom of the fridge for a week if you are worried.

In fact this should not be needed as they only have to be below 10 degrees C to make them bulb up. Just plant them out now and they will be OK.

I would imagine that only in warmer climes is there ever a problem.

Anyone ever had a problem with bulbing up in the UK, not counting cloves planted too late i.e. April/May onwards?

If its autumn planting yes, no if its spring planting

i tried growing them in containers (planted in December time) - the bulbs were only the size of marbles - but I probably did something wrong!!

I just got mine in yesterday, 56 of them, I'm hoping these frosts we're having will be enough to clove them up.

I'm sure it was this time last year when I got mine in and they were fine, a wee bit on the small side.  I am determined to have autumn sown ones this year but we'll see

I bought this in the end - it said it was for Spring planting, and I was buying some other bits & bobs from them.
