Nadine potatoes
« on: February 17, 2010, 12:39 »
Hi,

Thought i'd find a forum to get some info for growing. Big fan of home growing  :)

I have been growing my own veg for 2 years and one thing i like most is growing sweet corn and potatoes. Like many i am very fond of potatoes becuase i like chips and roast potatoes  :tongue2: trying to control myself

I grew King Edwards before and i did not get a good yield mostly due to eelworms. At first the soil was clay like and i got small tubers. So i worked it up with sand, compost and manure and managed to get nice big ones but almost all the big ones were eaten up by worms with holes all over it. I have consulted about this and someone introduced me to Nadine variety but i wanted to ask about the rate of yield per seed potato grown?

Has anyone grew these and has a rough idea of the yield per plant and the rough size
of the tubers?

your help would be very much appreciated.

thanks
Mani

ive grown nadine 3 years running and got good yields every time.can be a victim of slugs tho and are susceptible to blight.
they are also very waxy which makes them good for boiling for salads but not the best for chips.

I've not grown Nadine but they are listed as having better-than-average eelworm resistance.

However, although you may also have eelworm, they do not burrow into the tubers, or at least not visibly so; your problem is more likely to be slug or wireworm damage.

Have a look at this.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Hi,

Thanks for all your posts. we usually use potatoes for boiling too, just hope these take less time to boil than King edwards. I like the sound of the Romano potato's. I have just read about it on the web. i might also try the Cara ones too.

Guess at this stage its a trail and error to see which potato suits your cooking needs. i will see if the allotment place will give one of each if he has them and see which one is better.

thanks,
Mani  :)

I've grown Cara as a main crop for 2 seasons. They do very well on my plot. Some huge spuds for baking. Good resistance to a number of things as well.

Try sowing the green manure, Mustard after you've harvested. Breaks up the life cycle of the pests.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

As a big fan of Roast Potatoes I tried Catriona last year and got a fantastic yield. Out of all potatoes I have grown they were the most crispy when roasted.
