Newbie with a question
« on: May 29, 2007, 18:18 »
Hi all

Just about to have a go at keeping a couple (well three) chooks. We have a young family, do the growing veg thing so its the next step 8)

I managed to get the day off work so have set about building the coop. It not going too bad considering I'm in catering and have no clue about wood work! All from (free) reclaimed wood.

Off to B&Q to look at roof covering but will prob go with the felt and watch out for the red mites. What wood preserver should I get? Is Cuprinol (sp) fence and shed preserver ok? The stuff thats about £15 a can and soaks into the wood.

thanks in advance

Hello Neighbour, I am in Salisbury not far from you I think really.

Can't help on the wood preserver I used Tanelised timber so its pre treated, will need to know for the future though.
Hope you enjoy your chucks, what sort are you getting?

The cuprinol is ok mate, and take no notice of what you've heard about felt, thats ok too, just keep up with your spraying for red mite, and you'll be ok :)  :)

Thanks both. I have gone for the felt but went with B&Q fence and shed preserver about a fiver a tub and has got pet safe written all over it!

We're in Malmesbury - not too far - and are not sure on the sort we are going to get yet. My wife wants a fluffy brown one! - so thinking Buff Orpington and my 3 yr old daughter wants a white one (any suggestions??) - she is going to call it Cloe  :)

Buff Orpington is a good choice for cuddles and docility and they are so pretty but if its eggs you want you will only get a few.     My Buff has laid about 15 since we got her 3 months ago.  They are nice calm gentle birds, mine is a talker too and they are real Ladies.  You can get White Orpingtons too and for your little girl it would be a lovely choice but I am biased as they are the breed I always longed for from about 8years old.  I would not part with my Buffy eggs or no eggs.

Don't know what others can suggest which meet your needs but know the advice will be along soon.

Good luck

Hi - we bought a shed from B&Q, put the bob hole in on the side, a perch up a height with a poo slide tray underneath for cleaning and then got a bit mad and put nesting boxes on the side as an add on! - I have used a couple of wood treatments now, both have been cuprinol, as long as it says fine once dry around animals I have not had any problems, I use the spray to treat for red mites about every 6-8 weeks and douse with mite powder.
