red mites and ashfelt roofing
« on: January 12, 2010, 17:44 »
i want to ask a question ?

is ashfelt really that bad to use on hen houses and why do red mites seem attracked to it ?

i am in the process of renewing my roof { when the weather is better } and today i got thinking about this ashfelt an red mites and ppl saying its a complete no go zone but is that really true ,is there any real sceincfic edvidence of this { sorry about bad spelling }

i know there will be 101 answers to this but i thought it mite be a good topic to bring up ,

I believe the main problem with roofing felt is that is nailed or glued with lap cement and you cannot get at the mite to sort them out. My (small)  coop roof is a 1/2 sheet of ply with a shower curtain over it which is all taken off for weekly cleaning.
The smoother and more easily cleaned the covering is the better.

Ps ashfelt or asphalt is a bit heavy for coops, also known as tarmac. :)

There are more modern ways to seal a roof now'
one product i use is a fibre based roofing seal
and it is wonderful 2 coats and its better than
felt... it's called aquaseal or sumit like that
i will dig out my tin for the trade name if anyone needs to know'
just paint it on ... anything....

This is a thread I came across when searching for information on roofs.  I was looking for some stuff about run roofs (we are thinking onduline is the best for this - would you agree?) but hadn't thought about the coop roof.  It is a shed and has a normal shed roof - wood covered with felt.  We need to recover the shed roof but was going to use more roofing felt.  Is this a bad choice?  Should we take it off and use some onduline there too?

I prefer onduline and had this on my shed roof, but now have new coups and these have got industrial felt on which is heat sealed on with bitumen not the thin tacked on shed felt. Like was mentioned before red mites will go under the felt and hide during the day so eradicating them can be a problem.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Anyone tried predatory mites to control red mites?
