Wow Trillium, I know bears can be mean, but attacking trucks...
Don't suppose you can keep small pets outside either very easily

Friend of mine went on a fishing trip to Alaska.  "What kind of gun did you bring?", asked his host.

"I thought this was a fishing trip. Why would I bring a gun?"

"To shoot a grizzly if we're attacked"

"Sh*t!  Did you bring one?"

"Only this little hand gun"

"That woudln't stop a grizzly bear would it??"

"It would if I shot you through the knee cap!"  :!:  :!:  :!:

Of course the real answer is to go vegetarian - no animal waste at all then

Along with the refuse collection don't get me started on vegetarianism either!! LOL
Starting to think we need a debating forum!!

  That's an oldy over here, WG.

And yes, bears will go after incoming trucks to get at the fresh buffet coming in, so special gates are used to help keep them out. Pets can run faster than bears, but humans can't. My dad lived in bear country and had a dog which was part wolf and it did fine. A cousin went to Lakehead Univ. at Thunderbay at the top of Lake Superior, and anti-bear classes are mandatory to start the year. They sometimes roam the campus despite patrol vehicles trying to keep them out, so special protection houses are located throughout the campus along with emergency phones.

My dad's most annoying experience with bears was when he and his brother had just finished picking a pail full of wild blueberries for gran to find a bear had patiently been waiting for them to finish before moving in. Reclutantly, dad had to drop the pail and run.  Never assume bears are stupid. Grizzlies have the worst reputation, but blacks can be almost as nasty. Browns are not something to tangle with either.

Bears, great. Take everyone's mind off moaning about the water/manure/skip
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
