Not much happening with my Potatoes I am chitting
« on: March 03, 2010, 08:33 »
I started to chit my Yukon Gold and Sante potatoes a couple of weeks ago. I have got them in a cool porch, but not much seems to be happening. There are small signs of the sprouts coming but only just. Shall I move them somewhere warmer.

No.

You'll end up with long chits that'll snap off easily.

You've got some sprouts, so you've obviously broken the spud's dormancy which is the aim of chitting.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mine usually end up being chitted for 4-6 weeks before planting. I start chitting at the end of Jan (I get my spuds from a potato fair), and early to mid March they get planted out, weather permitting. The chits are usually dark green or purple in colour depending on the variety, and about 1-1.5cm long, but stocky with it.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Just to check, Broadhaven - Are they in the light? (apologies if a silly question).
Mine took over a couple of weeks to come through so don't worry - just leave them where they are I reckon.
If at first you don't succeed..... cheat!

lift it and check at the bottom. 5-6 of my spuds were chitting underneath. turn them if you see sprout underneath
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

I forgot I had my potatoes delivered in December and when I found them in their box in my nice warm bedroom in January the sprouts were all ready 2 inches long, white though due to lack of light. I have since put them in the plastic greenhouse on my balcony but they have not done anything since, think the cold might have killed them off, the tips of the shoots have turned blackish in colour - have I ruined them??? :(

I have just checked the underneath and my Sante potatoes have indeed started sprouting underneath.  :)
Yes Dougsta they are getting plenty of light.

Please have a look at this, especially the bit about chitting potatoes.

It was not without good cause and past history, I was asked to write it.

DD I did read your article before chitting. but it is the nature of the beast. Didnt do anything wrong. My potatoes werent washed as yours in picture and they were all muddy. didnt dare to wash it. hard to find the eye and belly button and we are novice. saw seed potatoes for the first time in life. just after a week what i thought belly button was indeed eye.
and more fun couple of my potatoes has eyes very close to belly button.

It's many years since I've been able to do that!!!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Flip 'em over, taking care not to damage the chits and Bob's your Monkhouse :)
