Lice question
« on: March 14, 2010, 15:44 »
If you treat your birds with Frontline, do the eggs drop off or do they dry out and crumble?
I did my girls on Friday pm but I can still see egg 'pods' for want of a better word on the feather shaft.

if they hatch out then the frontline will get them. have you had a look in the poultry information section regarding external parasites?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Yes joyfull, read it three times before I posted the question - no site seems to answer this one! I am assuming the same as you say - I haven't found a live one at all yet and the two who are affected only have a small amount near their vent. I can't believe how hard they are stuck!!!

iam i right in thinking you can not get frontline for chickens if so what type do you use.from what ive read on here it seems to be very affective and might be worth getting some in just incase.
One light Sussex , two bluebells, two white stars, two speckled stars , two cream legbars.

Hi

I believe frontline works by stopping the breeding cycle of the flea/ bug so when the one's you can see on an animal die there should be no more.  Poultry owners have found the cat/ kitten frontline to be very useful in tackling all sorts of bugs that live on your chooks, even scaley leg, but please note that it has not been tested on chickens and there is no 'frontline for chickens'.

If you are considering using it my experience of it is that one vial will treat 3 largish chickens for about 3 months.  I use it on my Polands who are prone to 'head lice' in conjunction with louse powder (every 6 weeks or so) and treating the hen house for red mite.  As with most things prevention is better than cure so regular dusting would possibly be a better and cheaper solution.

Hope this helps.

I get the spray from my vets (and as it is not tested on chickens I do have to sign for it), any reputable pet shop that is licenced to sell it should not sell it to you if you say it's for chickens.

I frontline spray twice a year and touch wood only ever had a problem once and this was on a broody (broodies can be prone as they are a sitting target). I always get mine off my vets.
