converting shed
« on: February 27, 2010, 12:26 »
Hi, I am thinking of converting a 6ft x 4ft garden shed. Can somebody tell me if
This would be big enough for twelve chickens?,
How high do the perches have to be?,
How far apart do i place the perches?,
      How many perches willi need?
And lastly do i put the perches on the same level or on a slant?  ::)
Any help would be most appreciated as i have never done this before. Thank you  :)

it will be plenty big enough.
make the perches higher than any nest boxes but not too high that they could injur themselves jumping down - or put a ladder up to the perches.
I had my perches all on the same level but others have different so that the top chucks can get higher - but my top chucks never ever perched and slept in the nest boxes
Are you having your perches across or length ways - try to work out 12" per bird (but they will all squash up and usually take up less room!!).
Make your perches removable - helps with cleaning and red mite prevention/treatment.

Hope this all helps  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

i have 10 in mine and they have loads of room . for these 10 birds i have 2 perches about 2ft of the floor or so but they all perch on one so there nice and close together so whatever you do for them they will decide what they like

Hi Jeanette, I am doing the same thing as you and was busy sealing the many gaps in my very cheap shed yesterday!  I have been a bit extravagant and bought a shelving unit from Ikea that takes storage tubs to use as nest boxes (they are plastic so easy to clean.  I will also put a tray under the perches (plastic too, extortionate price but doing everything I can to minimise red mite risk) so that the poo goes on this rather than the floor, therefore making it easier to clean.

Good luck with it and show us some pictures when you have finished, I will too.
