Thanks WSE - you just reminded me of something when you mentioned protection.

I grew mine under debris netting, which provided quite a bit of shade, (remember the sun?) and also seemed to keep the moisture in.

This is them with the netting peeled back:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi DD, how far apart do you space them?

I have managed to grow autumn and winter harvesting caulis relatively successfully in super hard clay soil. They're never whoppers (head 18-20 cm across), but I quite like them dense so that suits me.

My problem with clay soil for caulis is keeping it moist. I earth them up a bit and then pile masses of straw around the base. Occasionally they shift a bit in the wind but recover. I also give them a handful or so of manure every now and then as if it were a mulch and feed from time to time with all-purpose granular fertiliser. I was advised to do this by a local friend, so I do it. Maybe they'd grow better if I didn't - I have no idea,  I just do what I'm told.

These are not super huge - about the size of yours, but that's fine by me. They're the first summer cauli's I've managed.

Spacing is about 18" - errr 45 cms, they were not fed at all, but the ground had stood unused for a few years and is quite fertile.

Club root rife, very sandy soil, mm let me think, not the best combo for cauli, these are All Year Round, I also grew Grafitti (purple) last year, no problems with a little care and thought.
Here are a couple of photos....

The little purple one Livi has in her hand was a off shoot from the main cauli.
