I am sure that someone came up with a great idea, have you searched the forum, one way is to use plastic sheeting, when its forcast you could support it on 4 poles with a hole in the middle.

We've got the same problem, no sheds allowed so no guttering.  We've only just got a water butt and we are going to try using a huge plastic bulb pot - it's about 2' 6" wide at the top, but narrows to about 7" at the base.  We're going to cut out a hole in the base about 2" across and put some fine netting across the hole so small mammals won't fall in.  The bowl will sit on top of the open butt, and be secured with some wires.

Here's hoping it works, it's a long 50 yards to the nearest tap when you are on journey number 15 of the evening.

I like the idea of the umberella, if the bulb pot doesn't work, we might give it a go.

Sounds like it will work a bit like a giant funnel. Where abouts do you get these hugh bulb pots from. I'm not sure what they are. Do you have a link to a picture of one.

JimT I'd love to take our long hose down to the plot and fill the butt.  BUT, the allotment police have eyes everywhere, it's not helped by the fact that several of the er, self appointed rule enforcers live in houses backing on and viewing straight over the site!

I learned the other day that our site used to allow hoses, but it was stopped when the parish council had to pay water rates on the site.  Apparently, there were a few arguments when individuals would hog the taps for hours with their hose too.

nwalch, sorry no pic but these bulb pots are sold in garden centres in spring, I've always found them hopeless for bulbs though, hence having a few kicking about at home.  Think of a big deepish (about 8") birdbath!  Infact, if you could get hold of a plastic birdbath that was wide enough, it would do as well. Yes, it's really just a funnel.
