chicken in a puddle
« on: February 16, 2010, 22:48 »
hi, Im new, have had free range chickens for 2 years, love my 'spice girls' dearly, have lost 'baby spice' to being eggbound 6months ago so i am super obsevant now. I noticed a strange thing, 'Ginger' whom used to be the leader and the largest chicken, until 'Simon' the rooster came along has become the smallest chicken (over a 12 mnth period) Anyway i noticed she wasnt hanging around the group during rest times and is sitting herself in puddles of water!!?? I was wondering if anyone would know why she would do this & should i be concerned? She has no signs of being eggbound but I find it strange and would like to get a jump on things just in case. any advice would be appreciated. thanx Nic.

Have you checked her over thoroughly, no lumps or swellings? is she laying ok? eating ok? It could just be that she likes the feel of the puddle, I tried ducking mine in cold water when they went broody and they obviously liked the feel of the cold water on their bottoms! strange birds  Oh and hi and welcome.

hi, thanks i thought only my chickens were wierd :) ginger cont. to lay in puddles then her comb wet floppy and she felt hot so i seperated her, added a couple off drops of 'rescue remedy' to her water and put her in my room (crazy i'm told, but the only place i could keep an eye on her). Well the next morning she nearly gave me heart failure because she was 'bocking' her head off as she could hear Simon crowing, so i let her out & she's fine!!  Ive cleaned the hen house top to bottom just incase there were mites (no sign) or maybe influenza of some kind? Hooray Ginger is good! (and shes my best layer) :)
