More Cockerel Questions
« on: February 13, 2010, 20:09 »
I have a wonderfully handsome large fowl Gold Laced Wyandotte Cockerel. I love him to bits, but hubby is about to do something nasty to him for crowing even when it's dark!
I also have a very young bantam cockerel, who is still in quarantine with three girlies.

My questions are:

I've heard about cockerel boxes, but what are they? Are they soundproofed?

Assuming bantams are a third of the size of large fowl, do bantam cockerels make a third of the noise??

If I manage to keep the large cock quiet, will I be able to put the bantam cock in the same run safely?

Thanks...advice appreciated, or new homes will be sought

I'm afraid this is an age old problem which has never been cured as far as I know.

Not sure what a cockerel box is but it is believed that if you can stop a cock stretching it's neck by putting it in a low box it is unable to crow as loudly.  I've never tried this but I've read mixed success with this.  In any case it can only be done for short periods and cocks don't just crow at dawn.  I don't think sound proofing is involved or would be very effective if it was.  It's not a practical long term solution.

Bantams can crow almost as loudly as L/F so the idea of keeping bantams won't prevent the problem I'm afraid.

Crowing or not I doubt that you can closely confine cockerels together without the danger that they will fight.  They would be less likely to fight if they were separated and remote from the hens or cocks which have been reared together as part of a family flock will learn to tollerate one another once they sort out who's boss.

Thanks Hillfooter. I don't think anyone could complain about a cock crowing during the day - only at 04.30! (I hope!)

I think I'll advertise my big boy, and wait to see how loud the babe turns out to be..
Thanks again

So...my beautiful gold laced boy has gone to his new country home - with girlfriends
waiting. New owners seem lovely (and vegetarian!).

I've also bought a new coop for my bantams with much thicker wood (a bit more soundproofing) and it has air vents at the apex, so less light can get in. Hopefully this will make things a bit better for when my babe starts crowing.

Fingers crossed.
