Garlic and frost
« on: February 09, 2010, 20:09 »
Hi All
Went down the plot yesterday and managed to get a little bit more digging done now its drying out ....and noticed nearly all the Garlic i planted back in November is sprouting up nicely.
Weather forcast this evening is giving us frost from Thursday onward so i was wondering do i need to do anything to protecet the garlic or will it be ok.
I have just got a couple of those small cheap plastic tunnels off e bay and wondered if i should cover them ???

No - garlic needs the cold in order to clove.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's healed my worrying mind too, I also planted mine back in November and then the inches of snow came and didn't expect anything to sprout, then laste week I was so pleased to see purple green shoots raising their heads.
It's good to know that the next impending cold spell won't spoil them, not so sure about the bunyard exhebition planted at the same time(not a sight of them yet)

If your broad beans are not showing I suspect that mice have stolen them. Dig down and see if you can find any. Plenty of time to replant.

If there are mice about it is probably better to plant them in pots or modules and plant them out once they have emerged.  Mice loose interest once they are germinated.

Cover your pots against thieves. Keep them in a cool place or they will grow soft and leggy.

My garlic have started sprouting too. I had the same worries when I couldn't see anything happening but now I feel more confident.
I planted some Centurion onion set in November but nothing seems to be happening with those. Can anyone ease my worries :(

No, sorry I can't in this instance.

They are not a winter onion. One site in fact says that they do well after the frosts.

I too was a bit worried.  It was the best part of 3 months ago that I last saw them when they were sown.  Since the thaw and a few sunny days to heat up the ground, every one has popped up.  Not one missed.

I was about to write them off and replant next week.

Just got to keep the faith...

Nope, but maybe too early dependant on variety.

Last summer I put garlic in far too late and got not a lot  :( in fact mainly nothing  ???

This spring there are six inch high healthy looking shoots from those ones    :D

So that garlic sure is freeze hardy
