It starts....
« on: February 13, 2010, 22:21 »
I hope you read that in James Earl Jones' voice.

I couldn't wait any longer - I've started my tomato trial.

Im searching for the "right" tomato taste. This year I've decided to have a concerted effort to find it. I have 31 varieties to try, today I've done the first sowing.

20 varieties, 2 seeds in each station.

Alicante
Alisa Craig
Beams Yellow Pear
Black Cherry (T&M)
Gardeners Delight
Glacier
Green Grape
Harbinger
Hawaiian Currant
Marmande
Money Maker
Muchamiel
Pomadoro Costoluto Fiorentino
Rio Grande
Roma
Striped Stuffer
Super Roma
The Amateur
Yellow Brandy Wine
Yellow Derby Striped

There are another 11 varieties but they're mainly F1's - I'll wait 4 weeks or so until sowing those.

Hopefully somewhere in there is the "right" tasting tomato and next year I can grow just 1 or 2 varieties  ::)

I have found Ildi (yellow cherry plum) very very tasty, and prolific in the greenhouse. Only stopped cropping when I pulled the plants out in December. I would highly recommend.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

theres more then 240 types of tomatoes,

... but Im only looking for 1 - how hard can it be  :D

I have found Ildi (yellow cherry plum) very very tasty, and prolific in the greenhouse.

I think that will be too sweet - Im not necessarily looking for the best tasting / cropping , more the flavour I remember, hence the inclusion of the more traditional varieties.

You must have a realy big Greenhouse

6x10 if it ever gets delivered  not ideal conditions but I really only need 1 or 2 toms off each plant to see if they taste right.

.... I supposed I could have looked for a tomato fair or similar  :nowink:  but where's the fun in that.

I grew Black Cherry last year and the family loved it  just goes to show no 2 people enjoy the same things...one man's meat etc etc.
You'll have to let us know Lardman :D

Black Cherry was great for me too!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I think this is the problem the rest of the family will happily eat sungold toms until the cows come home - but I find them far too sweet and lacking in tomatoness. Theres nothing wrong with them, they're just not what I want from a tomato.

I can't describe the taste Im looking for but I'll know when I find it.

My personal favourite is Red Alert, not only because I luv the taste but also because it has to be the easiest tomato to grow. No supporting or sideshooting or babying along, just chuck it in the flower bed and ignore it until they're ready to pick. I've even got away with putting it in a heavily shaded bed but still got a huge crop from it.

But this year I'm also trying out a few varieties I haven't done before - Gartenperle, Legend, Sungold, Alicante and Pomodora Roma Nano.
