Space for Raspberries
« on: June 25, 2006, 19:09 »
Have recently taken on an allotment and a kindly neighbour has given us some raspberries. Have nowhere to put them at the moment they're sitting in a bucket of water. Will I be OK to put them in a small area we've just dug over for a couple of weeks till I've dug over their permanent site? Do they like manure dug in? Haven't a clue what to do any advice gratefully received.

I think it will be a bit of a trauma if you plant them and uproot them. Have you some large pots you could put them in then plant out later with less root disturbance.
Good handful of bonemeal in the planting holes will give them some slow release fertiliser to get them going.

I'm trying to get a raspberry cutting to root in a glass of water at the moment. It's not wilting, but nothing developing rootwise. Did the same with a blackcurrant cutting and it rooted no problem. Are rasp cuttings difficult to get started?

The neighbour gave us the raspberries that had been pulled out of the ground from existing raspberries so they had a small amount of root on. I have now put them in pots ready to go in the ground when i've done some digging. As the root is so small not sure if they'll live or not we'll have to wait and see. I guess you could stick a bit of raspberry cane in the ground and see what happens

If they have roots on and did not get the chance to dry out too much should be OK, keep them in a sheltered spot if you can out of the direct sun and wind. Got to be worth a try!!!

Neighbour had put them in a bucket of water so fingers crossed I could have raspberries next year (hopefully). At the moment they're in the cold frame (no lid on) and their permanent spot will be at the side of the polytunnel so they'll be fairly sheltered. Thanks for the advice
