compost tea
« on: February 05, 2010, 09:22 »
Hi All.
Over the last few months I have been brewing barrels of compost tea made out of my surplus manure and compost and a few little extras in the hope that I might grow some super veg this year.
Has anyone had any experience with using compost tea and if so what did it benefit the most?

     Regards

It's not smelly atall lol
The idea is to keep oxygen running through the water until you bottle it  thus somehow keeping it fresh, I didn't have an air pump to hand but stirred it vigorously a few times a day and it seems to have worked.
I suppose the proof of the pudding will be when I open the bottles up again

Everyone on our site uses manure tea to great effect. I use comfrey tea as well - although I try to spread it just before I leave the plot for the day...
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Can you buy comfrey to make liquid fertilizer with or do you have to grow it? I've read that it's really beneficial to plants,

Comfrey leaves can simply be used as a mulch  around crops you want to feed. If you want a liquid fertilizer, the easiest way is to pack an old blender full of dry leaves but not water. Start the blender/whizzer slowly then work towards liquefy. After a minute or two it should be mostly liquid.
Pour this into a large watering can (minus the rose end) or a 5 gal pail, top with water, and add a bit to the particular plants. Don't store this as it will soon reek beyond belief.

comphrey tea, in deepest darkest east yorkshire

cut a few leaves from parent plant , we use an old onion bag filled to bursting,

we then submerge in a 45gallon drum for 2-3 weeks, staring every week,

very strong stuff when ready, then we 1/3 fill watering can with miture , top up with water and water into any plants we see fit ,

it works well on up and coming young potatoe plants , as soon as the spud plants show through the soil , each plant gets 1/2 a watering can

Peter, try my way with the blender. It's a lot faster and far less stinkier  :D The nutrient level is the same.
