A germination waiting period for seed potatoes?
« on: January 30, 2010, 15:07 »
We're almost ready to make our first plot as we've cleared half of the plot and treated the ground, so today we got some bag on first early potatoes, on the back it says you have to place the potatoes at about 10C, for 6 weeks or so and wait for new shoots/leaves to emerge before planting, can anyone elaborate on that or perhaps even suggest a better alternative.

Basically is this standard practice amongst growers, this 6 week waiting period, or do people do others thing to help it along.

Thanks in advance

Stephen.

There have been more threads on "chitting" recently than I can shake a stick at!

Do a forum search on "chitting". There will be plenty of reading material for you!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Trouble is there are several candidates for the sticky treatment which would make this forum a very sticky place indeed (and would they actually get read enough to make a difference?)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Nothing to apologise for; I'm sure we all just want people to get the most benefit out of the efforts which have already been made (especially when they were very recent).  ::)

I just Googled 'chitting potatoes' and a whole load of interesting info came up. This was the first hit:

a lot faster than buying a book  ;)

I hope you're NOT suggesting not to buy John's book, Terrier. You're hardly going to endear yourself.

Also there's plenty of information to be found, both on this forum as already suggested and on the main website, of which the forums are but a small part, without stepping outside the door.

Try this for starters:
