No problems with red mite in nest boxes now
« on: January 29, 2010, 11:41 »
Our hen house is quite large and we had 3 internal wooden removable nest boxes, however, having had to wash disinfect and attempt to dry them this winter, following first signs of red mite, we decided to see what other system we could use.  Checked out cat litter trays (not tall enough) or Wilko storage boxes (too tall).  We finally decided on black plastic buckets from B&Q at £1 each, dirt cheap.  Filled with straw and jammed under a wooden spar to stop them tipping up, the girls love them, and with the carrying handles so easy to take away, empty, wash and replace.  Of course I appreciate most people have external next boxes, but if you have room, try internal.  Both sides of our hen house lift away so getting in to clean it out is no problem. best wishes alison
