Pea net?
« on: January 25, 2010, 13:18 »
A net for sugar snap peas; I'm something of a novice, so will it be strong enough?
I had doubts after i'd finished it!
Take no notice of my friend, he'd say yes to anything!

What variety are they?

The ones I've grown in the past need more of a support rather than something to climb ap and don't get as high as that.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

One of the "Standard" is Oregon Sugar Snap, but you can't tell if this is what you've got!

It grows to 3', but mine never made it that high, you may have to tie them into your fence, I support mine on both sides, as with standard peas.

If your net includes Wilko green plastic string i would say no. Good cheap stuff but it weakens fast in the sunlight and will probably break just when the pea crop is heaviest.
I made a piece of netting from it last summer and it is in tatters now.

The height that the peas grow to depends on the variety. some varieties will easily grow to 6 ft

I would have thought that  one or at most two extra horizontal canes would strengthen your frame a lot ...enough for sugar snap peas. Just make sure that the joins between the vertical and horizontal supports is strong enough.

My support last year was  flimsier than the support in your photo ...just canes and plastic netting but it held up ok. The plants themselves grew to about four foot.

I always think that sugar snaps are a good crop to grow. Super taste when just picked off the vine, and a huge saving over those bought in a shop.  Not long now till those summer salads!!

The net came down today and the top of the frame is now timber. I'm replacing the net with a cane frame. Ran out of canes and have to wait until its 10% off at B&Q's for more!
I've also driven a piece of dexion into the ground fastened to the middle post! 8)

I preferred the first one!!

(Only kidding, and will follow your progress with interest since I bought exactly the same seeds from Wilkos yesterday!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I LOVE your scaregirl  :) or am I being sexist cos she's pink?

I bought looses 'sugar snap' peas from a garden centre and they easily topped 7ft! All the weight is at the top of the plants so beware the prevailing wind . Support looks great.
