Figures
« on: January 30, 2010, 15:45 »
Ok guys, my eyes have glazed over now because me and my OH have been discussing figures - numbers -  ???.  What is the cubic capacity of 100ltrs?

In other words, I have bought a 100 ltr bag of peat - what is the weight of this in kilos and/or pounds?

Depends whether wet, moist or dry?

I ltr of peat weighs.... wet  1.12kg, moist  1 kg and dry  0.4kg

Hope this helps

That is exactly why it is sold by capacity rather than weight. It stops dodgy traders adding water to make weight. A peat based compost will weigh more than a soil based one.

The amount of compost you get still depends on whether it is packed loose or tight. There may be some sort of regulation for this? Does anybody know?

I believe it's the loose volume, most compost bags say xl when packed

litres IS the cubic capacity - one litre = 1000cc. [based on one kilo of water at 20deg c].

If you want to know, take a litre of the soil and weigh it and x 100. But, as you move it from the bag to the jug to weigh, it will expand [more air] so it will be heavier than 100 times what you have weighed.

Bathroom scales?
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Surely soil based compost is heavier than peat based?

Sorry, there are too many variables to answer this question.  A sack of feathers is different to a sack of lead.

OK, just had a wonderful meal of spicy pot-roast brisket and a couple of whiskys, so I'm up for another go (trouble is I don't actually understand the original question!)

100 litres is a cubic capacity, or measure of volume (the volume of 100 litres of water), how much it weighs depends on the density of whatever your 100 litres consists of. If it was 100 litres of water, it would weigh 100 kilograms (about 220 pounds) and occupy the same volume that about 22 gallons of water does.

However, your compost is almost certainly lighter than water, so will weigh less than that but 100 litres of anything will always occupy 100 litres of space.

If you want to know how much it weighs, I have to refer you back to the bathroom scales, although i'm not sure what use that information would be to you!

(Not sure I'm feeling quite as wonderful now!!  ;) )

What Whisky?
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
