PIGEONS - flying rats!
« on: January 20, 2010, 12:21 »
is there anything the blooming things wont eat?
i got my plot in may last year and just planted a few bits, most of it was eaten  only things that survived were some cabbage and brocoli after i netted them and they grew back, and some spuds.
i lost spring onions, carrots, half the cabbage and brocoli, beetroot and all lettuces
although it was a new plot and the fence was not finnished so i think the rabbits had a few too.
i will be getting my self plenty of mesh for this year but is there anything the flying rats wont eat? i dont want to cover everything if i dont have to

I think that is a bit harsh on the woodpigeon , flying rabbits maybe but not rats. :)
Town/ feral pigeon do deserve the flying rat label but not the woodies, pretty birds which make great pies.
Thank you for fattening them for me. :)

It might have been the rabbits that did much of the damage. I foolishly left my cabbage and sprouts uncovered last year and they were devastated by pigeons but one I covered them they recovered. Nothing else - carrots, parsnips, beetroot etc got touched. Fix your fences and see if anything changes.

Could also be sparrows as they are partial to a mixed salad , i watched one hen have a peck at lettuce , beet ,spinach and kale in turn. If you have a flock of 30 sparrows  dining at your plot the pigeons will often get the blame.I think birds generally tend to ignore the onion family.
