COREOPSIS
« on: January 17, 2010, 11:18 »
Is the coreopsis, annual or perennial.  I've got some in my garden from last summer, and don't know if I should pull out the dead stalks, discarding it altogether or cut it back.  It's a beautiful sunny day, so I'm able to get into my garden at long last, after it being under about 6" snow for 3 weeks.  :)

The simple answer is both!  It depends on which species you have. As a rough rule, the more colouful reds and blues, are hardy annuals, whereas the yellow and oranges are perennials.

Perrennials can be propagated via division in spring.

Hope this helps

Last years growth is still there (dead of course), do you know what I should do with that. Do I cut it off.  Sorry to sound so thick. :(

Not thick at all, there are lots of things I have yet to learn about gardening ... and it's my job

If the last years growth looks unsightly then cut it off, but not too close to the ground, because if it is a perrenial you will need to dig it up carefully in spring and gently ease it apart to make 3 or 4 plants then replant them, water them in and wait for your new plants to grow  :D
