Thunderflorries allotment
« on: June 23, 2006, 08:37 »
Hi to all,
I just thought I would let you all know that I'm still trying to kill tha stingers, I have covered a lot of the ground now with an eclectic mix of light excluding fabrics, curtains, weed suppresent stuff (2 types) even an old and huge sign that I was given not to mention the cardboard and old compost bags.  It looks a right old mess :D
On tuesday I met another plot holder who said he had been there since last September and had not met anyone else. So John was very helpfu and said I could use his tools that he leaves there. (Hidden)
I have started to dig an area and turn the soil, the next day I take out a lot of the roots and moss. (I don't think the moss is a very good sign)
But as there are overhanging trees which I hope will be cut back in the winter I remain hopeful that it will not be an ongoing problem.
Any ideas as to what I can do with the newly dug areas i thought about doing a manure crop, but what else could I do with it, I'm stuck for ideas.
Kind regards Thunderflorrie

Whack in some French beans - they add nitrogen and are lovely as well.  Salads of course, maybe some calabrese (not sure if it's too late to sow some varieties)

Moss and nettles implies an acid soil - check out the pH  - lime this winter except for where you are going to plant potatoes next year.
Check out our books - ideal presents

Thank you John,
I have planted some french beans and beetroot today.
I have a dug space about 6tf sq and it gets a bit bigger every day. I am now sporting a finger blister as well.
I met two more blokes today, they said they only spend an hr every sunday morning at there plots all yr round, so I shan't see much of them I expect.
But they did offer me apples and rhubarb plus red currents and gooseberries, as much as I like, I shall take them up on the offer next time I'm down there.
I do love this site and enjoy reading everyones posts and I'm very grateful for all the advise. But today I dug up several worms all entwined and found myself thinking how nice they would look on top of a pie crust  So on the flip side I think I'm now phycologicaly damaged by the thread started by twister :!: I hope I recover soon :)

Twysted has a lot to answer for... eating worms. Actually worse than the French!
