We have two Rhode Star hens that lay brown eggs as well as two Skylines that lay blue eggs. We have noticed that some of the brown eggs that we get are very pale and have extra gritty deposits on the blunt end. These are normally like sand but are clearly part of the shell. The shells tend to be hard but thin as they break much more easily than the other eggs that we get so I suspect for some reason the shells are not forming evenly. Other than that the eggs are normal and all other hens are laying well and without problems. I haven't seen any bullying issues etc and both Rhode Stars are in good condition.

I assume that it is just one of the Rhode Stars that is laying these eggs. Does anyone know what is causing this?

Some unevenness in the shell is quite normal from time to time. As long as they are getting the correct feeding it should correct its self in time. Many factors can affect the shell. Offer grit and oyster shell, not too many scraps etc. I sometimes get this after a molt and when they are back in the swing of laying they have returned to normal. You may never see eggs like these in the shops because they are considered under par just for the asthetic reasons but they are all the same inside so enjoy.
