I grew then using your method in the cat litter trays ~which was brilliant. So nice of you to come to my assistance once again! You are lovely!

Pleased it worked, my leeks look all weak & floppy, but they soon recover. They have a natuaral defence & are as tough as old boots.

Missed that method of growing them in cat litter trays DD - would you repeat it for me or direct me to the topic - many thanks.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

It's under useful topics & sites, in the GYO stickies forum, the one just above this forum when you look at the forum home page.

Thanks DD. Look's like you have another convert!!! But, when is your recommended time/date to start sowing the leek seed into the tray's? Thanks.

I used the cat litter tray method last year and now have a lovely bed of 40+ leeks all growing nice and fat!

I've had 3 for some soup but then the snow hit and our site is cut off!!! :( I'm hoping to dig up some more next week for more soup  :)

Just for information I grew leeks called Neptune which have good rust resistance. They were sown very thinly in 10" to 12" pots on the 23rd March, similar principle to DD's method, and kept in a cold greenhouse until germinated. Out of about 150 plants 20 have gone to seed and therefore I will try sowing 1 or 2 weeks later this year to see if that improves performance. Even when they went to seed I found the seed stem edible in fact they were quite good. I am sure some chef could make a killing using the stems as an alternative vegetable.
