Wire fencing for escapee
« on: January 29, 2010, 11:22 »
Despite clipped wings my black rock still manages to fly up and over the fence, I know I have seen a supplier in Devon/Dorset mentioned but can't find it anywhere.  I need some taller plastic coated wire or weldmesh.  Can anyone advise please, thanks alison

Sorry don't mean to be patronising but you mention one hen and wings plural. Did you clip both wings? If you did will still be able to get over fence. If clip one wing usually off balances them so that they can't get airborne enough to escape!
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I thought I'd been so lucky with my 3 girls. They haven't tried to get over the 6' fence or hop into the various enclosures for fruit bushes that have 2/3' chicken wire round them. They can't get into the raised beds because they're all fenced and netted too and they haven't hopped over the temporary 2' piece of mesh that stops them coming to the back door and pecking it to bits. I thought they were sooo blissfully happy they spent their days looking downwards searching for food with no thought of escape. Even their flying down the garden didn't bother me.
Then I spied Looby today. She had got up on the side of a compost box and hopped over into my fenced off comfrey area (they destroyed my comfrey last year) When she saw me she got in a panic because she couldn't get out but soon worked out the way back.
Now I'm worried.....they've cracked one fence......I'll have to improve the fortifications EVERYWHERE!
Don't ya love 'em!
