Another asparagus question
« on: December 28, 2009, 14:08 »
Anyone know if/how i can move asparagus, they are 3 years old but i need to move them.

When is the best time, and can i split them to get more?

Many thanks

Jilly.

Asparagus doesn`t take kindly to be moved, but if you HAVE to move them now is the time as long as soil conditions are right. I`ve never heard of them being divided but you could give it a try as long as each section has part of the crown, :D

As said, its extremely difficult to divide asparagus as the roots all grow from one crown which doesn't multiply in itself. You'll get dozens of roots to a single crown so I'd recommend you not try to split yours. New crowns are cheap enough.

By 3 yrs the roots will be long from spreading so chop out as great a length as you can and leave the main centre as a rootball with soil. Be sure your new planting hole is well watered before popping in the transplant.

Thanks very much for the advice, think i would be better off leaving them where they are.

They are very happy, but we are revamping the garden.

It's such a treat to get them for a short while, so yes i think they will stay there.

As my other half would say WOMEN!   ;)

The area you were going to move them to why not plant new stock and in 3
years time throw away [compost] the old ones

Just work around the original asparagus. You won't regret it in the end.
