GREENHOUSE ALTERNATIVE
« on: November 26, 2009, 06:03 »
Does anyone have one of these 'plastic' greenhouses?  I wondered whether they are strong enough to last for a couple of years until I can afford a 'proper' greenhouse?

Description: A really compact walk-in greenhouse that includes shelving and plenty of space for growing and working. It has a strong tubular steel frame and a heavy duty reinforced PE cover with a roll-up door and wall fixing rings and guy ropes for extra stability.      ....... less than fifty pounds

Simple push-fit assembly without the need for tools

I had 2 of those, both bought at the same time, one uprooted and blew away / rolled over onto its roof several times so I put bags of compost on the bottom of the frame and plastic walls to weight it down, and tied the  guy ropes to a fence, that did not work, the wind got inside and the poly ripped where the guy ropes were attatched and the zip round the door ripped off the plastic. The other which was next to it must have been just out of the wind and it lasted for 3 years before the roof turned to dust. The zip on the doors did not last very long though. Just be careful where you site it if you decide to buy one, at the first sign of any trouble move it to a different spot. CC

these plastic things are no good in my opinion, unless you have an area which is sealed off from the wind.  The plastic will also degrade slowly in the sun.
Now then, I am a very pleasant lad from York.  I have a decent half plot on Holgate allotments.

I have a couple that I put inside my cold conservatory in the spring to bring seedlings on (I put a light-bulb in the bottom on cold evenings).  Even so some good natured souls looking after the plants whilst we were away managed to rip the plastic when closing the zip. I wouldn't recommend one for outside use! My suggestion would be to look on eBay / FreeCycle / locally for a free / cheap second hand greenhouse

These plastic greenhouses are pretty useless, especially on a windy allotment, however . . .

I had 2 of them (freebies). I discarded the plastic covers and covered them with green scaffold netting, then fixed them to a concrete slab base using copper pipe clips. They have served faithfully as excellent interim homes for plants prior to planting out and also provides shelter from the worst of the weather during the winter. By the way they haven't blown over since they were erected - 5 years ago, but the netting will need renewing this year.
