Meat geese and ducks
« on: December 06, 2009, 14:05 »
Hi again  :)  just want to pick the knowledge of you all  again please! I have three geese that I hatched back in July they are a cross of Emden and another breed that I cant quite remember  My question is that I am thinking of having one for Christmas day and selling the other two as Christmas birds.I have always wormed regular but just want to know when should be the last time to worm them if being used as meat? I dont want to taint the meat and dont want goose being worm ridden!I also have ducks which I may do the same with  so any help would be appreciated,so thanks in advance!

Can't help with the worming I'm afraid, but could they be Embden x Toulouse?  that's what we had one and I think is a fairly popular cross

The instructions for whatever you wormed them with should give you the withdrawal period (ie the time you can definately not eat them within) but other than that I guess it is up to you and the longer the better before they get reinfected.
Christmas not far off if you are thinking of doing it before then so would get checking!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

We hatched them on the 20.07.09 and two weigh in at 16lb and one at 18lb I have two females and one male. They have only been fed on grass and corn.I must admit I was worried about Geese but I have realy enjoyed it!

Are you going to kill them and dress them yourself Tom?  Geese are not the easiest things to kill and pluck!  I prefer turkeys and chickens!!!

Actually I don't like plucking at all, hurts my hands, but hey ho, someone has to help himself do it!!  although we have 2 willing helpers,  not sure if the newest trainee will enjoy doing the turkeys though   :D :D

My new neighbour is like the female version of me :) So me and the mrs get on great with her. Both myself and helen (mrs tomsbirds  :tongue2:) can do hens and ducks but we have never tried to do a goose before, but my neighbour has been doing birds since childhood so she is on stand by if we get stuck  8)
What should I charge for a goose?

Well the last time we did geese was back in 1997 and we charged £30, then on River Cottge forum one lady said she charged £35 last year, but when she asked her butcher how much he charges she fell through the floor!

Have a look here, I can't believe these people are charging £20 for delivery!!!
