Grow your own feed for chickens
« on: December 03, 2009, 19:27 »
do you grow anything to feed yours? i've been growing greens for them eg spinach beet, but next year i'm growing masses of sweetcorn and will share some with the birds. they adore the kernels i've given them this year and seeing as for me sweetcorn is an easy crop to grow and maintain i'm sowing about 500 seeds next year.

The annoying thing about `bunging' plants in the ground for chicken food is that they tend to grow better than the ones you nurture for the kitchen. :D

It seems all my veg was grown for the girls this year....or so they thought! it was my fault, i didnt block the veg off, and before i realised they were going to eat everthing, they ate everything. As they had just come out of their cages, we didnt have the heart to stop them, but we are already making plans for hen proof paths/flower/veg beds.....they are not going to be happy chucks!
Can i ask ...where on earth are you going to put 500 sweetcorn plants?, you must have some land

what's more is i got 6 packets of sweetcorn seed for 2.50p and i saw one packet of the same variety for 2.29p online so i think i've done very well.

i'm not the slightest bit worried about what to do with 1000+ cobs next summer; i know i can eat, freeze, feed the chickens and/or give them away.... unless they don't grow as well as they have the last 2 years.

i have paced out where to put them on my allotment, it's quite wide and i've 2 allotments anyway. i'm expecting them to keep the weeds in check too (after the first weeding anyway).
