Not exactly gardening related but... tiling
« on: December 08, 2009, 10:23 »
I'm finally getting around to getting my kitchen tiled (nothing to do with the fact my mum arrives next week *cough* ) Anyway... having a slight problem with the electric points.

I took the cover off the point (after turning the electric off at the mains), carefully measured and cut my tiles, stuck them on the wall, carefully spaced.  Now find out that the tiles are too deep to allow the point cover to be attached properly, meaning that the earth pin is only a little exposed.

Solution: buy a dremel (oooh new toy  ;) ) and carefully sand off the surface of the tiles so I can attach the point cover again?

BTW my point looks similar to this  It's a bit nifty.  underneath is only one electric connection, but the point converts it into two separate outlets.  The "mechanics" are 7x7cm and the plastic cover is about 12x8cm and is meant to fit ontop of the tiles.  I obviously chose rediculously thick wall tiles

I'm not seeing any images on the web page you posted Casey, but longer socket screws? That's often the option once tiling has been put in place around an electric point that was already there....

Hi Argyllie, normally I would have thought longer socket screws would work... except in France the earth pin is part of the socket and not the plug.  As it is now I only have a few mm of earth pin, rather than a full cm.

Hm, yes I suspected it wouldn't be that simple, but as I said I couldn't see an image of it. Perhaps one of your French compatriots may have the answer then.... :)

I have that problem from time to time and I simply find a few small washers and slip those onto the screws but behind the socket bit before it goes into the wall and the socket bit stands out further than normal, which mostly meets the face plate now. A bit of find adjusting and you're in business.

Great solution ... but how come you've had that problem? ... I never have ... I'm still gonna make a note of your solution though, cos you never know ;)

If you could take a pic, Casey, Most ponit boxes can be taken out and refitted nearer to the surface.  (If they are Legrand, it's very easy to just demolish them and fit new ones).

I had that problem because the original tiles were much thinner than the new ones I put on, and the silly dolt who did the electrical work cut the outlet wires far too short so we couldn't pull out the outlet boxes further. This was our solution rather than open up walls and rewire.

Hi Tode, I'll take a photo tonight.

I would really like to avoid having to put in new points as these ones are actually brand new and were only put in when I got my new kitchen last year! (and yes, they are legrand  ;) )

Well I took the photos then I managed to fix the problem myself by doing what Trillium suggested :)

My wall is now tiled and all I need to do now is to grout the tiles and finish off the crepi on the top half of the wall any my kitchen will be finished (it's only been a year since it was installed lol)

Glad it helped, Casey. I meant to say outlet box but for some reason kept saying socket box. Glad you understood regardless
