All set to set some eggs
« on: May 15, 2007, 20:01 »
Well I put the little cage in the hen house with lots of nice shavings and Yumm has settled in nicely. I got 6 Wellsummer eggs and 6 Buff Orpington eggs at the market today so they are ready to go under her.

When is the best time to sneak them in, she is not sitting on anything at the moment but she doesnt seem bothered, evening when its roost time or morning when I make her get out for a poo and food?

So, as I take it:
I have to get her out once a day and make her stretch and feed
I do that for 18 days
then I leave her to it? as they could hatch anytime
Is this correct please?

I am so excited its going to be cool, I hope I get some hatchlings out of the 12 but won't bank on anything.

Only down side is I won't get any eggs for a while as she is my only layer the others are too young yet.

thanks
Sandra

hi ya, sounds like you are all ready and know what you are doing.

wait till its dark then just slowly pop each one under making sure she's settled on them and only put in as many as she can cover.

check her about an hour later then again in the morning  and good luck its going to be a long three weeks, in 9 days left and counting and if i candled them right last night all is looking good, either that or very very bad.

ive come to the conclusion that pavlova is just lazy and cant be bothered to peck me.

i get her out to eat, poop and drink and when she's finished she looks at me as if to say ' well aren't you going to put me back then?'

Well many bruises later the eggs are under her and I now wait in hopes.

So sweet she was all cuddled up in the box and little Gucci her previous chick had got in there too and was cuddled up on her back, I suppose if she didn't want her there she would have stopped her.  I will wait and see what happens.
