A bit of subject but when i was about 10 (23 years ago) i kept 1/2 a dozen geese for fattening.  I always remeber my mentor an experienced poultry keeper then in his late 70's always reminding me to "mix that mash well lad"

I'm still not sure why geese really do love mash more than just straight pellets but they do.

I'm thinking of getting some more this year and every day i'll  think of that old fella and make sure i mix it up well.  He could pluck a goose in minutes, never got up before 11 and  I once so him catch his fingers in a rat trap, an absolute star.

We used to make our own troughs for feeding mash, pellets etc,  the main thing is to incorporate a brush handle at the top that can can spin freely, this stops any birds using the trough as a perch and helps to prevent soiled/waste feed.

That sounds useful, greenmoor. Any more info on how to do this?
