Laryngotracheitis
« on: November 16, 2009, 16:40 »
Can anyone help??

I have been keeping hen for 20 year, but I have never come across the problems that I have suffer with the last lot of hen I have bought.   I think they have  contracted  ILT (Tracky) and I have had two deaths.  The symptoms have been  coughing, gasping for air with the mouths open and blood in the mucus when they have sneeze.

My question is, has anyone got any experience of this and if so, what is the best thing to do with the remain birds.   I believe they can remain infections for up-to 24 months.
I have read that culling the birds and disinfecting the shed is the only sure way of eliminating the disease

Brown Hen, its sounds with 2 deaths already your birds may have the severe form of the virus, although it might be wise to comfirm with a post mortem. The coughing or cawing from the throat combined with bl>>dy mucous sound pretty consistent with ILT.

ILT is a horrible disease, and survivors will be carriers for life,so any new birds are likely to become infected. You can vaccinate (eye drops) but never ever mix unvaccinated birds with vaccinated birds. So if you sell birds or show them then this could be a problem.

You can only treat symptoms, reduce tracheal inflammation, create a humid enviroment, double dose of Apple cider vinegar in water, bronchial dilators (the vet can give you a powder to pop in water)

Good luck Brown Hen!

ILT does sound like a nasty disease and one I'm not familiar with.

How many hens do you have Brown Hen ?   If it's not many then culling and thorough disinfection might be your best option by the sound of it  :(

Poor you...Poor them.  Its such a hard decision to make, and I think you know the answer, are possibly  looking for reassurance that it really is the right way to go....yes, if they were mine I would have to cull them. They suffer terribly when/if they catch it. You would be fretting forever any time any chook coughs or sneezes, blaming yourself for not doing the deed earlier.  Get a really hot bonfire going before you start, cull humanely, incinerate ASAP, then disinfect everywhere. It might then be an idea to leave the coop/run empty for the winter and start afresh in the early spring.

I'm so sorry, I really feel for you

Thank you everyone, it’s good to get your reassurance that what we are going to do is the right thing.  We only have twelve hens, but that enough when you have to wind yourself up to do the deed.  We do have humane dispatcher, so everything will be done properly

I will be back hopefully with good news and a shed full of health hens.

Very upset
