deep raspberry canes
« on: November 12, 2009, 09:12 »
Hi again

Got my first specific question if that’s ok!

While waiting to get my veg plot ready I have planted some Autumn Raspberry canes.  Because I am planting them in a slightly awkward position (although should grow ok) I ended up planting them deeper than I had planned/expected. Probably about to 4 inches deep now.

The books say 1 to 2 inches so new canes can come through. Should I just bite the bullet and re plant them or will nature find a way….

(and again, should I stop worrying about it..!!)

Cheers

I don't suppose it'll do any real harm, they may just be a bit slower getting started.

If there's just a few, and only recently planted, (and you've got some spare time) you can replant.

They like plenty of mulch round the roots.

I would leave them where they are. I am sure they will emerge and grow as normal. You will find that within a few years they will work their roots to the surface anyway and, as tode says, they will need mulching to keep their roots covered and cool.
