Chickens and ponds
« on: November 02, 2009, 17:12 »
 Does anyone have chickens and a pond? I have two small ones, both with beach areas for the wildlife, but I have read some horror stories about people's experiences of chickens and water. Comments please............!

I`ve got my ponds netted to keep the cats and herons off the fish but the chooks  still try to decimate the tadpole population. The chooks have jumped on the netting and got soggy undercarriages but no other problems.

My chickens are right next to a large wildlife pond that i put in long before the chickens arrived.
In the summer the oxygenating weed grew that well that it looked like a garden...yes the chickens tried to walk water
After they got their feathers wet and a bit of flapping about they learnt there lesson. They now walk to the edge but know their limits ::)

We've had chickens, ducks, guinea-fowl and peacocks for about thiety years, and never once had trouble with them and the pond.
Rxcept when we let a chicken hatch a duck's egg, and the baby duck refused categorically to go anywhere near the water   :D     :D

I love reading all the posts, they give me such vivid images in my head I chuckle away for ages and everyone thinks I'm going mad! But seriously many thanks for your experiences, I think it will be a case of watching carefully and doing whatever's necessary.

I have a wildlife pond in my garden and the girlies don't go near it, they do love the pond weed which I pull out for them as it has loads of beetles and things in it.

We have a pond and the chooks don't take any notice of it. But I think  in winter we may try to cover it as we don't want them walking on the ice and falling through!
