Best way to store unsown seed for several years?
« on: November 01, 2009, 07:56 »
Hello,
I finally got an allotment this Autumn after being on the waiting list several years. Have spent about £60 on seeds for the stuff I want to grow - many of these packets I'll only need to sow a small amount this spring (as long as they're viable!). What's the best way to store these so I can try to use in subsequent years? I know I should tape up the packets and keep in an airtight box, yes. But a search on the internet gives mixed views as to whether should store this in dark cupboard, fridge, or freezer. Anyone got experience of this?

Fridge I'd say - but you need to also look at longevity. Parsnip for example doesn't last from year to year whilst lettuce I am still growing from the very first packet I ever got as I sow little and often and sow from a variety of packets.

They should be kept dry, cool and out of the light.

Another soluyion is to try and share packets between neighbours: saves a lot of waste  :)

You could store them in the container with some silica gel that will keep them dry.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

That life-span guide is great - will give the 1 year seeds away and try to save the rest.
Thank you!
