supermarket toms!!
« on: October 31, 2009, 10:34 »
as its saturday my lads have gone off to play football/training but have left orders for a homemade tom soup for dinner,, which I use my own toms for,, unfortunately did,nt have enough ripe so nipped to supermarket for a few,, started to do soup which starts off as toms are cut and put in a dish in the oven for a little while,, normally there is a little bit of tom juice in dish,, used the supermarket ones and there is nothing but water in the dish even when I,ve pulped them through a sieve its just a redish coloured water thin liquid when normally its a thick tomato juice/pulp..

just shows even the basic veg from a supermarket is just water..

I don,t buy my meat from a supermarket cos of the water content ect,, and to be honest I don,t normally buy fruit and veg usully my own or farm just I had to get a few other things so picked the toms at the same time..

so if anyone is thinking of giving up the lottie ect please don,t you won,t get the same quality ect from anywhere,, and to be honest I have a feeling of cheating and shame of buying the toms from the s/market..

and those bought from farm shops taste lovely (although are grossly overpriced). You can't win either way - apart from growing your own

As Mum says a lot are grown hydroponically in large controlled glass houses, so they take up a lot of water.
Same with peppers and a fair bit of other veg these days.

nutritional value of food has gone down over the years. but why?
I have noticed it in the few vegtables I was able to grow this summer (1st time growing).

If you do find a tasty supermarket tomato it`s worth saving some seed. If the commercial growers can get flavour then the home grown version should be even better.
I`ve done this a couple of times and it works. :)

Not guaranteed though, if it's an F1.

You could be bitterly disappointed.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I normally put a couple of trial plants in the greenhouse just for fun but these are backed up by the usual stalwart varieties.

You could also spend a kings ransom on F1 seed and be disappointed , you have to take the lows as well as the highs if you grow you own veg. :D
