recommend pumpkin/squash
« on: October 28, 2009, 18:40 »
I have just cut into my first Sunshine pumpkin.....first time I have tried these ones.
http://www.thompson-morgan.com/seeds1/product/584/1.html
There were only 2 plants in a 6ft x 4ft area and i got 5 fruit set.

They are one of the smaller types, but I was surprised by how large the seed cavity was inside.
By the time I had taken the seeds out and skinned it, there wasn't really much flesh inside at all. :(

I don't want to grow huge ones, but would like a bit more to eat :)
Can anybody recommend a variety?

Little gem have a good amount of flesh per fruit and have the added advantage that they are nice immature so at the end of the season you can still eat the unripe fruit. I have grown them for 2 years and you get 10-15 small fruit per plant.
This year I have also grown baby bear that are a more traditional pumpkin but still small although I have found them to be generally smaller than quoted (but once a gain i got 10 fruit off one plant). They don't have lots of flesh like a butternut but you get a good amount with 1 or 2 fruits being enough for 2 people.
Both are sprawlers and need lots of space

Crown Prince - very tasty but not that prolific

Harrier butternut - quick ripening - so suited our pants summer.

Someone on here (I think) gave me some Blue Queensland seeds. They were delicious and kept for ages. Unfortunately, I lost the seeds in my move :(....must get some more ;)

Sugar Pie Pumpkin - loads of flesh and once cooked; tasty and velvety.

Crown Prince is a good eater and keeper. They are firm when cubed up and put in a curry or stew. Softer one which is good for mash is Sweet Mama.  I rate Winter Festival too which I like using for rice dishes. For sweet pumpkin pie I like Green Striped Cushaw which is  pie pumpkin  :)
