Selling Eggs?
« on: October 24, 2009, 12:19 »
I intend to get more girlies next Spring, getting well hooked on these cuties.  Thus far have been giving away the eggs, but wonder if I could sell them.  Does anyone else do this and if so any tips and ideas from your experience would be great, thanks alison

Hi Alison,
I sell all my spare eggs to friends and those around the doors near me. They often get extra for thier friends also  :D
you need to decide what price you are going to charge given the cost of producing them, dont under charge as the first price usualy sticks.
as long as you are not seling them commercialy the tax man wont bother you but you still need to be carefull as it is ,I think, officialy a business venture .

I sell mine at £3 per doz regardless of size and people seem happy enough .

Hi, I also sell mine to mums at school!! I charge the same £1.50/half dozen and never have any problem as people very happy to pay having seen the chickens running about the garden and knowing their eggs are no more than a couple of days old at the most.

We only have 5 chickens so I find the egg money covers the cost of food and keeping etc.

Go for it!!

We have a chook club in our village that meet once a month and we all get together and set our price for eggs so we all charge the same.

This year we all charged £1.50 per half doz.

Hello Alisonwo,
Yes, there are rules and regulations.
If you sell at the door, that is considered to be "over the farm gate", so
1.) you must use new egg boxes, or the buyer can bring a used box along for re-use for their eggs.
2.)You must also put a Best Before Date - they recommend three weeks, but as I know when my eggs have been laid, I put that date and a Best Before Date of four weeks minus one day.  i.e. Laid 25th Oct...Best Before 21st Nov.
3.) You should NOT wash the eggs; if very mucky, just a gentle wipe with a damp cloth, or keep the dirty ones for your own use.
4.)  Do not store your eggs in the 'fridge if you plan to sell them.  Keep them in a cool place until sold.  Then they can be refrigerated.
5.)  Do NOT sell cracked eggs.  If the membrane is still intact, I use them for baking.  If totally broken, then my dog enjoys the egg raw.

If you want to set up a market stall, then you must register with DEFRA and there are a lot more rules and regs..
There is a lot of detail in the Home Page, if you'd like to search around a bit.
Good luck.

This year we all charged £1.50 per half doz.

I think you might find that practice of price fixing is actually illegal as its against 'fair competition' rules,   in the taxi trade we had letters from our licencing and trading standards depts at the local  council warning us of the severe penalties resulting from convictions for 'price fixing' for goods/services

I know its a completely different line of business but the principles could very well be the same.

Incidently,  the 'going rate' around here only seems to be £1 per half dozen

Charging varies a lot depending on area.  Around here you will find prices from £1.50 to £1.90 per DOZEN!  some people think my £1.80/doz is too much and prefer to go to the supermarket, where they can just about buy the cheapest caged eggs for slightly less than that!!!! lol

as already mentioned you can sell them via the back gate system and thats fine and yes there is a few simply rules to follow but thats it as cathingirl has explained  :D.
if your girls are kept on a allotment site an your selling the eggs watch out for the council mine after 1 year of knowing that i sell my eggs  decided that i needed to be licensed for doing this but defra etc etc etc an anyone else i could think of phoning knew nothing of me being licensed so instead to keep everyone happy i registed with environmental health ppl at the council gives me a tiny bit of back up in case anything goes wrong .

p/s if you have 50 birds or less you can sell them as fresh ungraded eggs at any market stall but over 50 birds then you  have to get licensed  how do i know   u gotta see the paperwork on it all i have here theres pages of it .

p.p.s now everyone says they are donating towards their feed not buying my eggs  :D
